What does online proctoring cost?

Online proctoring prices vary widely across the market, depending on the system and the use case: AI or human monitoring, volume, region and exam duration. The figures on this page are illustrative market examples, not PRUEFSTER pricing — ask us for a quote for your exams.

What actually drives the price

A "per-exam" number is really four numbers multiplied together: how much of a person's time the exam needs, how many exams you're running, how long each one takes, and where the people doing the work are based. Change any one of those and the price moves, which is why one vendor's headline figure and another's can differ by a factor of five and both be accurate for what they're selling.

AI-only monitoring sits at the cheap end of the scale because no one watches live — a system flags anomalies during the exam and a person reviews the flagged moments afterwards, rather than sitting through the whole thing. Add a live human proctor and the price reflects that person's time for the full length of the exam, not just the incidents. Volume moves the price the other way: a provider running ten exams a day prices differently than one running ten thousand, because fixed costs — setup, support capacity, review tooling — spread across more sessions. Exam duration multiplies whichever staffing model you've chosen: a two-hour human-proctored exam costs roughly what a thirty-minute one does per proctor-hour, just for four times as long.

None of this means a published number is wrong, exactly — it usually means it was priced for a different volume, duration, or staffing mix than yours. That's the case for the figures on this page too: they're examples of what the market charges for particular combinations, not a quote for your exam.

The four cost drivers

AI vs human

AI-only is cheapest; human proctoring costs more.

Volume

Higher volume lowers the per-exam price.

Geography

Rates differ by region across the market. PRUEFSTER’s proctors are based in the EU.

Exam duration

Longer sessions cost more, especially with human proctoring.

How to get a real quote

A quote takes four inputs, all of which you already know: how many exams you're running (per month or per year), how long each one lasts, whether you want AI-only monitoring, human proctoring, or a mix, and whether you need extras like identity verification or the 360° room scan for higher-security sessions. None of that requires you to have already chosen a system — book a demo and we'll work out the combination that fits what you're testing and what it's worth to get right.

If you're comparing us against another provider's published number, ask what's included in it: does it cover identity verification, human review of flagged incidents, and support, or are those line items on top? A lower headline price that excludes review or support isn't necessarily cheaper once you add those back in — and at PRUEFSTER, human support is included at the same level, 24/7, whether you're running AI-only monitoring or live human proctoring.
